The solution

The power station has 22 plate heat exchangers which consist of two 2500kW seawater coolers heat exchangers, ten engine lube oil coolers and ten engine jacket water coolers.

To be awarded the contract, we first had to be better than the original equipment manufacturers in price, delivery and service. We then had to be approved by the Isle of Man Government, which required a detailed proposal including how the services we offer, would benefit the economy of the island.

The power station is only operated during high demand or an outage of one of the other power stations, except every day after 3 p.m. when it is switched on to generate electricity, to sell back to the mainland. The two 2500kW heat exchangers are duty & standby cooling for the entire site and protocol dictated that the station could not operate with only one of the heat exchangers in operation. The engine heat exchangers were less critical. However, if any engine was unable to run then this would have had a negative financial impact. Therefore, each day’s work had to be completed by 3 p.m.
